Notes
Title from lid of outer box.
22 hand-colored scenes from the Civil War are pasted together in a long panoramic strip. The strip is mounted on two rollers within a one-sided box; exterior cranks turn the strip with a key (original knobs lacking) causing the panorama to pass across a proscenium arch cut into the top of the box.
Milton Bradley, a Springfield, Mass. draftsman, printmaker and designer, created the Myriopticon in 1866. Although it did not appear until after the war was over, the Myriopticon was part of the integration of childhood and war. The pictures were intended to be back-lit by a lantern or candle and shown in a darkened room (Marten)
With sheet of 30 printed tickets: "Reserved seat. Admit the Bearer to the Myriopticon. Proprietor [blank] No. [blank]"
Library's copy lacking a poster advertising the show and a booklet with directions to the owner.
