Gift of Julia P. Wightman 1991.
Notes
Added engraved t.p.
Illustrations by Friedrich Unger.
Fifty-five compositions by Unger frame the poems.
Without music.
First edition.
Colored tissues between etchings.
Inscribed by Froebel with an eight-line autograph inscription, signed and dated Hamburg, May 5, 1850, to Auguste Schmidt.
"Typendruck von G. Froebel in Rudolstadt"-- leaf [3] recto.
Although Rüman 411 calls for musical scores, no such scores seem to have been issued with the first edition, as evidenced by several copies of this work. Rüman is also inaccurate in his collation. Froebel was the founder of the first Kindergarten (1837) and stressed the importance of children being taught through occupational games. The poems all have an educational intent.
