5th January, 1976. Lathrop C. Harper, Inc. 20 East 40th Street, New York City. From Felix de Marez Oyens. "At risk of telling you something about which you undoubtedly known much more than I do, I should like to point out that your Emblems (ca. 1750) (Morgan 84) is based on the text by Daniel de la Feuille (Devises et Emblems, Amsterdam 1691) and that the engravings were copied in reverse from Symbola et Emblemata (Amsterdam 1705, Dutch title 1741 and 1743), an emblem book commissioned by Czar Peter the Great of Russia with text in eight languages (including Russian). This rather interesting fact seems to have escaped the standard bibliographies and catalogues"--(Praz., B.M. Cat., etc.).
