Notes
These early lessons for youth contain The milk for babes, "rendered now a little more easy & proper for children;" the Westminster Catechism also specially shortened by Mather so that it might be more easily memorized by children; "that we make the first burdens we lay upon them as easy as ever we can;" and Mather's famous prefatory address to parents, reprinted in Ford's New-England Primer, giving his views on catechising. The Puritanism that produced this catechism prompted Cotton Mather to say "Few Pastors of Mankind ever took such pains at Catechising, as had been taken by our new-English Divines."
Inside the covers are tantalizing leaves which some enterprising scholar will probably identify as from an early Indian captivity.
