Images and typography seem to be somewhat earlier than the reproduction in Haining.
Theodor Brand, the book's inventor, obtained a German patent for the book in 1878, and a British patent followed a year later.
"In order to produce the sound, gently pull out the cord underneath the arrow on the text accompanying each picture"--inside upper cover.
Book has sounding box and nine pull-cords. Animal voices imitated by miniature bellows, when cords are pulled.
8 large, full-color lithographs, facing a poem about each sound.
