Notes
Title and series from publisher's slip case
Telescopic hand-colored, engraved peep-show with three viewing holes which allow the viewer a perspective view of Palais Royal of Paris. It comprises a front cover, four cut-out images numbered I-IV, and a backdrop numbered V, connected at the top and bottom by bands of contemporary paper folded accordion-style.
The front cover shows the colonnaded entrance to the palace with a horse carriage, soldiers, three dogs, and people promenading; without the French flag displayed on the roof (Gumuchian, Marlborough). The four cut-out prints reveal the interior of the courtyard with a fountain, statues, rows of trees, and the facade of the palace. The side-views reveal people strolling along the arcades lined with galleries and cafés, such as Galerie de Beaujolais and Café de la Rotonde. The backdrop merely depicts clouds and silhouettes of buildings.
The Marlborough image of the front cover, which has been identified as a potential contemporary German forgery, shows that it is a mirror image of the Morgan copy. It, too, is without the French flag.
