Notes
Titles from front cover.
Telescopic, hand-colored, and lithographed five hole peepshow of the Muslim holiday of Bairam. It comprises a front cover, backdrop, and five cut-out images, connected at the sides by vertical bands of paper folded accordian-style. Viewed through one larger and four smaller holes, cut out from the center and two sides of the front cover, the city of Constantinople is depicted on the backdrop and front cover, showing arcades with figures, domes, and minarets, with the harbor in the distance.
The Bairam festival succeeding the Ramadan presented three days of festivity. A great procession including the Sultan and his court, took place at the old palace, the Seraglio Point, starting early in the morning. It honored the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his first born son, Ismail.
