While serving in the Dutch military, Stedman was deployed to Surinam to assist troops fighting against members of several maroon communities, who had escaped their enslavement on the Dutch plantations.
With 80 engravings (16 of which are by Blake) from drawings made by the author with contemporary coloring by hand of all the plates.
