Accession number
PML 17599
Creator
Sheridan, Richard Brinsley, 1751-1816.
Published
Dublin: Printed for J. Ewling [i.e. London?, after 1790]
Notes
Of the first edition dated 1780 only 4 perfect copies are known: Harvard College, Mr. Bemis (Boston), Mr. Barton Curry, Dublin (privately owned).
A pirated text, with London cast (p. [iii]).
Imprint probably false: the pseudonym of the printer is meant to recall G. Ewing, of Dublin.
At one time this was considered the first edition, & dated ca. 1778; but the printer uses the short "s", a style introduced in 1785, & the paper is undated (i.e. manufactured before 1794).
In this state, there are double rules above & below quotation on t.-p.; in another state, there are no rules.
There are no errors in the running title - p. 2 has "For Scandal"; p. 3-20, 51-93 have correct running title; p. 21-50 read "For Scandal - The School."
The leaves 2 & 3 are misbound between 1 & 4, bringing the first page of text after the t.p. The letter 5 is small, indicating a date of printing later than 1790.
Uncut.
The last leaf, a blank, wanting.
