For a description of the complicated publishing history of this work, see F.F. Madan, "Milton, Salmasius, and Dugard" (The Library, ser. 4 vol. 4 (1923) 119-45 and "Revised bibliography of ... Milton's Pro populo Anglicano defensio" (The Libray, ser. 5 vol 9 (1954) 119-45)
MS. note on t.p.: "Ex donatione Autoris Londini: mense August A[superscript]o, 1651" is not in Milton's hand, as identified by Gordon Campbell, because of such letter formations as the D and the L, as well as certain phraseology. He believes this fits with a pattern of inscriptions written by recipients rather than donors. Thus, this volume is likely to have been a gift from Milton, so identified by the anonymous recipient.
