The French original (Memoire contenant le precis des faits [etc.] was published at Paris by the French government in 1756 as a justification of the war with England. In it were included documents captured from the British at Fort Necessity and at Bradock's defeat.
"A letter written by Colonel Napier, and sent to General Braddock, by order of the Duke of Cumberland [dated London, Nov. 25, 1754]": p. 202-209. It was this letter which called forth the ironical defence of the Duke of Cumberland, published at London in 1756 under the title: Reasons humbly offered, to prove, that the letter printed at the end of the French Memorial of justification, is a French forgery and falsely ascribed to His R-1 H-ss.
