Folded plates include the map of "Ould Virginia", engraved by Robert Vaughan; map of Virginia, engraved by William Hole; map of New England, engraved by Simon van de Passe; and the map of "The Summer Ils."
Maps: Library's copy has state 2 of 4 of the map of "Ould Virginia", with trees and additional place names but without name "Iames Reeve" as printer in the panel at lower right; state 4 of 10 of William Hole's map of Virginia, with addition of motto "Vicnere est viuiere" under Smith's arms, but without "Tauerners roade" added above "Chesapeake Bay"; state 1 of 3 of the map of "The Summer Ils", without the addition of "Penistons Redoute" in panel "G" and the Printer's name in "N"; state 4 of 9 of Simon van de Passe's map of New England, with the motto "Vincere est Viuere" added at lower left but before the addition of "Paynes Ils" above "Cape Elizabeth." Inscriptions/Markings
Inscription in unknown hand in ink on front flyleaf: King Charles I Copy / The Gift of the Rev. Wm. Barlee, Rector of Wrentham. ...; second inscription in different unknown hand in ink on front flyleaf: Presented by the author Captain John Smith to King Charles I on his succession to the throne in the following year. With the Royal arms on both covers. The portraits of the Duchess of Richmond and the Princess Matoaka were not issued with the book, according to good authority, but were subsequently inserted in some copies.
