Illustrated with a frontispiece plate of the author in volume 1 (unsigned) and 12 etched and engraved plates by J.S. Müller after Francis Hayman, each preceding the individual title pages of the 12 books of Paradise lost.
The Morgan volumes contain one volume only of the 9th edition, interleaved and made two volumes for William Cowper (labeled Vol. I, Pt. I and Vol. II, Pt. II). The first volume contains Books 1-2 of Paradise lost, and the second contains Books 3-6; volume 2 (Books 7-12) is at Princeton University Library.

The two volumes contain Cowper's manuscript notes for a projected new edition of the work. The notes run from p. 6 to p. 211 and on 102 of the interleaved blank sheets.
