In Tahiti, in 1891, Henry Adams wrote down the national traditions related to him by Queen Murau and the old chiefess Hinarif (Arii Taimal), later issuing a volume entitled "Memoirs of Marau Taaroa, last queen of Tahiti" ([n. p.] Priv. print., 1893), two copies of which are in the library of the Massachusetts historical society. Subsequently developing the history of Tahiti, Mr. Adams issued the present work.
