Presentation lithograph with added hand coloring and name added in brown ink "to Miss Edith Story" both attributed to Thackeray.
Typescript laid in (probably by bookseller) identifies this as an advance copy of the second edition, bound to Thackeray's design, for his presentation to the child Edith Story at Christmas 1854.
Laid in: Autograph letter signed "F. Locker" dated 11 August 1865 addressed to Edith Story concerning the wood engraving after Richard Doyle of Thackeray reading the manuscript of his Rose and the ring manuscript to her. 2 p. (MA 1189). With a proof copy of the engraving on India paper (see Alderson & Oyens, 340b).
Laid in: Autograph poem and typescript of poem "The Rose and the Ring (Christmas 1854, and Christmas 1863)" by Frederick Locker Lampson, first printed in his London Lyrics (London; John Wilson, 1868), p. 81. This poem, written to Miss Story, concerns her grief over Thackeray's death in 1863. Also a printed portrait of Locker-Lampson.
