Notes
Cover title.
A setting of the first introductory poem in Marmion, likely printed for the author by John Ballantyne in February, 1807, and circulated as a "specimen" to friends like Anna Seward and the Marchioness of Abercorn (see Letters, vol. 1, pp. 350-54).
Scott has pasted in twelve lines of fair copy manuscript emendations over the printed text--8 lines at the bottom of p. 8 and 4 at the top of p. 9. In addition, he has inscribed 9 lines of verse in ink directly on the paper at the bottom of p. 16.
For the history of this item and variants between this setting, the manuscript, and the first edition, see Ainsley McIntosh, "Essay on the Text," in Marmion: A Tale of Flodden Field (Edinburgh: Edinburgh University Press, 2018), pp. 287-333--a copy of which is held in the departmental file.
Formerly identified by the library as proof sheets of the "Introduction to Canto First" for the first edition of Marmion (1808).
Text on cover (p. [1]) formatted like a section title page.
