English translation made by the artist's daughter, Mary Smirke, is based upon the Spanish text of Pellicer (published in 1808).
4 volumes extended to 9 by the addition of upwards of one thousand extra illustrations, including sixty three of the original drawings designed by Vanderbank for Lord Carteret's edition.
The 63 original drawings by John Vanderbank (1694?-1739) are dated 1729, accompanied by the engravings (2 states) by Gerard van der Gucht (1696-1776) and Claude du Bosc (1682-1745?). The Vanderbank drawings are now in the Dept. of Drawings and Prints.
Volume II: Engravings by William Hogarth (1697-1764).
Frontispiece to volume II is an original pen and wash drawing signed by Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) and entitled "Don Quixotte &c Sancho refreshing themselves in the Blue Mountains." This frontispiece is now in the Dept. of Drawings and Prints.
