Notes
Vignettes etched for a 12mo edition, which was never published. Later acquired and reworked by Gabriel Huquier, who executed the title page.
This copy has the title plate in two states (first and second plates)) and the allegorical frontispiece in three states, with two preliminary states before letters (plates [3] to [5]), including a working proof pulled from the unfinished plate (plate [4]), with a sketch supplying part of the design at left executed in sanguine chalk by the artist; the 112 numbered vignettes, along with the "B" and "C" vignettes, are present in two states, showing how Gillot left them and where Huquier completed work on the plates. Some of the prints in earlier states have been mounted onto or inlaid into the bound leaves of the volume.
No printed text; a 2 page manuscript table of contents recording the plates in the volume by fable title is included in the back.
