"Of these War Elegies, the first ten were written between 1940 and 1942 at my home in Selma, California. The eleventh was written early in 1943 shortly after my induction into a camp for conscientious objectors here on the Oregon coast"--Note (page 5).
"War Elegies is here presented in its first printed form. It was previously issued by mimeograph in 1943 as the initial publication of the Untide Press. The present printing contains in addition War Elegy V, included here in its proper chronological location. War elegies is hand-set in Goudy Light Oldstyle and Futura types. It has been printed in Linweave Early American in an edition of 975 copies, and was completed in the month of November, 1944"--Colophon.
