"(Formerly called) 'The Snob', a literary and scientific journal now conducted by members of the University."
17 nos. (all published) from Thursday Nov. 5 [1829] to Thursday Feb. 25 [1830].
Vol. 2 edited by W. M. Thackeray.
The extent of William Makepiece Thackeray's contributions to "The Gownsman" is uncertain. William's son, H. Astley Williams in a note in Notes and Queries, sixth series, X, 1884, p. 419 asserts that "Thackeray wrote over the signatures [Greek] X and my father over [Greek] Th." But it seems reasonable to assume since there exists a copy in Thackerey's hand of a contribution signed [Greek] "Th" that this is his signature. There are pieces signed thus.
