Notes
1 folio album, material dating between 1765-1890, but chiefly from the 1860s. Compiled collection of 205 broadsides, about 120 with crude illustrations; most are without printer's names, but Hanvey and Nugent of Dublin and Johnston of Belfast appear with some frequency; also included are 11 prose broadsides, a number of pages of ballad reprints cut from 19th century magazines, and 41 engraved portraits of English rulers, actors and actresses, notorious criminals, and other celebrities of the late 18th and first half of the 19th century.
The individual broadsides and miscellaneous engravings comprising the bulk of this collection have been cataloged separately.
This collection of "pomes penyeach," as Joyce called them, includes ballads on murders, executions, the death of O'Connell, the events of 1848, natural disasters of various kinds, rejoicings over Garibaldi's capture, episodes of the Crimean War and the Civil War, Heenan the boxer, the wedding of Edward and Alexandra, Mrs. Yelverton, Moody and Sankey, etc. Well-known titles include: "The farmer's lucky boy," "Bundle and go," "Brennan on the moor," "Irish Molly," "Paddy on the railway," "Shan Van Voch," "Colleen Bawn," and "The Real M'Coy".
