Composite Panel featuring Charlemagne
Acquired by J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York, and installed in his library 1907-1909.
This composition features a large central panel of Charlemagne holding a cathedral in one hand, and a scepter in the other. Below him, in a separate, crescent shaped fragment, a plaque is labeled "veritas" with a matching half crescent fragment featuring a shell design at the topmost section of the panel. Surrounding the panel of Charlemagne are various fragments featuring floral motifs along with several heads. The upper third of the window also features two triangular fragments of a robed Christ and a group of bearded men.
