Coronation of the Virgin
Acquired by J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York, and installed in his library 1907-1909.
Upper scene, left: Ave Maria / Dominus Tecum/ Gratia/ Plena (Hail Mary, full of Grace, the Lord is with Thee).
In the center, the Virgin is crowned by the Trinity: Father to right, Son to left, and Holy Spirit above. Both Father and Son hold the crown. The Son wears a regal crown, the Father an Imperial one as well as holding an orb in his left hand. The scene is framed by classical pilasters with red shafts and blue bases and capitals that support a red lintel with an arch in the center. The arch shows a seraph's head in the center. Above the lintel is the Annunciation, when the angel Gabriel comes to greet the Virgin with God's request that she become the mother of the Messiah (Luke 1: 26-38). Gabriel is on the left and on the right is the Virgin at prayer.
