Summary

The leading together of disparate pieces of painted windows was widespread over centuries in English glazing practices. Segments that had survived the extensive destruction of windows during the iconoclasm of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were often consolidated when nineteenth-century glaziers began to install new windows. Many such reconstructed panels were reinstalled onsite and others reached the art market. (For an in situ example, see the composite window of mid-15th century elements, St. Mary Redcliffe, Bristol, St. John's chapel, n XIX.)
