Banqueting Scene
Emile Gaillard (1821-1902), Paris; his sale, Paris, Paul Chevallier, 17 May 1904, lot no. 679; acquired by J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York, and installed in his library 1907-9.
In the midst of a room containing bull's-eye windows, a group of five men are seated around a table. Plates and serving vessels are on the table while another man serves the company drink. The scene is framed by ornate red columns at the sides which support a blue entablature. A scene of festivities continues in the segment above the entablature. On the left, two men play stringed instruments while three men and three women engage in a lively dance. At the bottom of the window, an inscription on orange glass is framed by two yellow ovals each containing a coat of arms.
