Welcome Panel with the Sacrifice of Isaac
Acquired by J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York, and installed in his library 1907-9.
Husband and wife stand on either side of a white ornate central column silhouetted against a gold background with white rinceaux. The husband holds a rifle over his left shoulder. He is dressed in a dark jacket, with voluminous knee-length green pants, and green stockings. His elaborate black hat sports a white plume. On the right, the wife is dressed in a white cap and apron and wears a long green skirt. She extends a welcoming cup in her right hand. The couple is framed by elaborate architecture of columns at the side and a curving arch with foliage in the spandrels and a central of boss of a basket of fruit. Above, Abraham prepares to sacrifice his son but an angel stops him and assures him that God will reward his loyalty (Genesis 22: 1-18). The biblical scene is framed by rectangular architectural bosses.
