Heraldic Panel of a Bishop or Abbot with Saints Theodule and Catherine
Emile Gaillard (1821-1902), Paris; his sale, Paris, Paul Chevallier, 17 May 1904, lot no. 680, where the date is read as 1606; acquired by J. Pierpont Morgan (1837-1913), New York.
Inscription: W.G.W.
An elaborate coat of arms surmounted by a red miter commands the center of the panel. The device is silhouetted against a string-decorated white ground at the top and appears to rest on a slanting floor at the bottom. Above the miter is a radiant cloud with the initials W.G. W. on a curving band. Flanking the arms are two powerful saints. In the traditional male on the left (dexter), is St. Theodule, dressed as a bishop in the same colors as the arms, red miter and cloak and blue short tunic. On the right, St. Catherine wears a crown and holds the palm of martyrdom and the sword of her beheading. She wears a red and white damask bodice over a white skirt and is enveloped in a blue cloak. Both saints stand in front of decorated walls with predominantly blue or red patterns.
