Notes:

Amelia Sturges married Pierpont Morgan in 1861, but died tragically four months later in 1862. Edward and Amelia Sturges were the third and fourth children of Jonathan Sturges. In 1840 and 1841, Sturges sponsored a European tour for Durand. This painting was probably done as a gift for the family after 1841, when Durand returned from abroad.
