Vienna or Spain, 16th or 17th century
Gold, decorated with translucent enamel.
chalice: height: 9 inches (230 mm); base: 6 inches (153 mm) diameter; paten: height: 5/8 inches (15 mm); 5 3/4 x 5 7/8 inches (145 x 150 mm) diameter

Attributed to the Imperial Habsburg workshop, Viennna or Spain, dating to the later 16th or 17th century, with some modern additions.
Chalice and paten are decorated with enamel in red, green, white, and yellow depicting fauna and flora elements - snails, butterflies, birds, pomegranates, grapes, fruit baskets, peacocks.

Inscribed on bottom of foot, "6 Marcos 6 oncas". Scratched into base, by a later hand, "Jimin'Cos Comps". This inscription refers to Jimenez Cisneros Complutensis, who may be identified with Jimenez de Cisneros, Cardinal of Toledo (1436-1517), founder of the seminary of Acala de Henares. The date date of the piece, however, rules out Cisneros as author or owner.
Seminary of Alcala de Henares (?); Ercole Canessa, Paris; from whom puchased by J. Pierpont Morgan, 7 July 1909.
