Plate with a Woman in Profile
Purchased by J. Pierpont Morgan from Jacques Seligmann & Co., 1906.
Dated "1519" on the back and numbered "39".
Majolica fruit plate with side profile bust of a woman between the letters M and A. Decorated with beige, copper, gold, and blue.
Produced in large numbers in Italy during the first half of the 16th century, plates and shallow basins with profile busts of women were probably presented as betrothal or wedding gifts. This plate, dated 1519 on the back, is related to wares produced in Deruta, one of the major Italian centers of ceramic production during the Renaissance.
