Notes

Single leaf from a book of hours with a roundel depicting the Disrobing of Christ, surrounded by Arma Christi.
Illustration: Christ being stripped before a crowd while St. John the Evangelist and the Virgin Mary look on. The border is filled with the Instruments of the Passion painted in gold on an alternating ground of red and burgundy.
Texts: Recto: Gloria patri et filio et spiritu sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc, et semper: et in saeculum saeculorum. Amen. Alleluia ... Verso: Deus in adiutorium meum intende. Domine ad adiuvandum me festina. Gloria Patri, et Filio et Spiritui Sancto. Sicut erat in principio, et nunc ...
Artist: Follower of Jean Bourdichon (1459-1521) and Jean Poyer (active 1465-1503).
The illuminator was likely active in Tours, working in the style of Jean Bourdichon (1459-1521) and Jean Poyer (active 1465-1503). It is one of five known miniatures illustrating the long Hours of the Holy Spirit from a Book of Hours, now dismantled. This miniature illustrates the beginning of Sext.
The camaïeu d'or borders of this miniature are of a similar style to those found in the Hours of Henry VIII, illuminated by Jean Poyer (Morgan MS H.8). A related page design can be seen in the Labarde Hours made for Jean Labarde of Tours, with miniatures framed by roundels and borders painted in camaïeu d'or over an alternating ground of red and burgundy (private collection, illustrated in the online catalogue Spotlight on the Middle Ages: Illumination from Catalonia and Southern France, Jörn Günther, 2015, pp. 18-23).
Known sister leaves: Christ Carrying the Cross, Binghamton University Art Museum (1964.97), Binghamton, NY; Entombment of Christ, Private Collection (London, Christie's, 15 July 2015, lot 19); Christ before Pilate, Private Collection; Man of Sorrows, Private Collection.
