          Notes
A single leaf from a Book of Hours with an historiated initial and border illuminated by the Master of Catherine of Cleves.
This leaf comes from an otherwise unknown Book of Hours illuminated by the Master of Catherine of Cleves; painted late in the artist's career (ca. 1460), it complements the earlier Hours of Catherine of Cleves (MS M.917/945; ca. 1440), one of the Morgan's most important illuminated manuscripts. But see also the description of MS M.1212.
Only fifteen manuscripts illuminated by the Master of Catherine of Cleves survive. This leaf represents the sole surviving folio from a sixteenth creation. The leaf's style, border, layout, and dimensions are all comparable to those of the Lochorst Hours (The Hague, Museum Meermanno, MS 10 F 50) from around 1460 and considered his last creation.
Associated text: Beginning of the Seven Penitential Psalms (of which the first is Psalm VI), in the Dutch translation of Geert Groote (1340-1384); the text continues on the verso. Transcription: "Domi[n]e ne. Here in dijnre verbolghenheit en straffe my niet ..."
Scribe: unknown.
Decoration: 1 historiated intitial (H) and two vignettes within a foliate border.
Artist: Master of Catherine of Cleves.
