Ms. persian almanac; written and illuminated in Iran, ca. 1850.
The scroll is designed with 1 central compartment divided into columns and rows of varying numbers and dimensions, flanked by outside borders inscribed with text written on the diagonal and running the entire length of the scroll.
Decoration: 1 illuminated headpiece with floral design on gold ground, penwork flourishes, and decorative borders, 9 panels with gold script written on a red ground; many of the columns, panels, and compartments are ruled and outlined in gold.
According to the note attached to the end flap, the almanac gives the months of the year, days of the week, and times for prayer.
Binding: end of scroll is attached to a wooden stick; maroon leather envelope flap folds over the outer end of the scroll; contained in cloth drawer box with leather end labeled: Persian Almanac, signed JPW 1961.
