Summary
Thanking Garland for his letter, but declining his offer for a job in Chicago; saying how he must come visit him in England first and that this summer would have been excellent; adding that he spent 8 or 10 weeks in May, June, and part of this month in London; describing how Howells just sent him a new Western novelist, W. Allen White, and that he hopes White will bring news of him and James's other friends when he visits him for a few days; questioning other people's abilities and ignorance to be able to interest his own artistic consciousness and understand his allusions.
