Summary
Acting in their capacity as "Commissioners appointed in virtue of an Act of Congress for establishing the temporary and permanent Seat of the Government of the United States;" reminding the State of Virginia that they are in arrears in the remaining $40,000 of their commitment of $120,000 as their donation "for the erection of the public buildings for the use of the United States;" detailing the consequences of their failure to pay; saying "in Consequence of the disappointment in receiving this large Sum of Money, very considerable inconvenience and even injury has arisen to the public buildings...We beg further to remark to your honors that the progress made in the public buildings during the ensuing Season might very much depend on the funds to lay in the necessary materials, which cannot be purchased in Sufficient quantities for the next Season without full payment of the Virginia Donation;" concluding that "We doubt not you will take the subject into early Consideration and place the payment upon funds that will not endanger an object of Such general Concern."
