Description
1 item (14 p.), bound : vellum ; 31.4 cm
Notes
Containing on p. 1, a small pen drawing of Queen Catherine, and the arms (in colour) of England quartered with those of Aragon; on p. 3 are seven painted banners of Elizabeth, Queen of Henry VII, Ferdinand of Aragon and Elizabeth of Castile, Prince Arthur (brother of Henry VIII), Henry VIII, Charles V, the Kingdom of Castile and Catherine of Aragon as Princess Dowager of Wales; p. 4 contains 7 large banners and 11 small pennants. Many of the illuminations are incomplete.
Manuscript written on 14 leaves of 24-26 lines each. These 14 sheets evidently formed part of a large record book, as is shown by the (pen) numbering of the pages.
Prior cataloging indicates that this manuscript "was especially prepared for Cuthbert Tonstall, Bishop of London, who was one of Queen Catherine's council during the divorce proceedings instituted by King Henry VIII; it was preserved as an heirloom in the Tonstall and Constable families from 1535 to the death of Sir Frederick Augustus Talbot Constable in 1894." It is unclear on what evidence this assertion is based. An additional note, signed "S de R," suggests that the information above is erroneous and that the manuscript was "bought by Marmaduke Tunstall in 1768 at the sale of John Anstis." A note in a contemporary hand found near the front of the volume backs up this second provenance statement: "bought at Mr. Anstis late Garter's sale at Mr. Baker's York Street, Covent-Garden 1768 for £0-10-6."
