Summary
Thanking him for a cheque; writing that he thinks the £10 pound deduction was fair because of the amount of changes he made to his piece late in the process: "... on the advice of a friend I somewhat chastened the style from that which my original mood had prompted -- perhaps making it somewhat too stiff now; and this involved heavy corrections which the Printers most deftly carried through"; adding that he trusts that "the series will be a success [with] you as Editor"; concluding that he was pleased to see notice of it in the "Academy" and he wishes the "Athenaeum" had assigned it to a someone "friend or foe to it -- who would have looked into it for more than 5 minutes."
