The words "Robert Catesby to John Grant" appear on the verso in what appears to be a contemporary hand.

Grant was recruited into the Gunpowder Plot in March 1605, suggesting that this letter may have been written sometime in the spring, summer or fall of 1605. However, there is no information on the item allowing for confirmation of this supposition.
