Telling him that they received the contents of the box; noting that they are glad he is in "tolerable good health, notwithstanding the proces[s] of freezing and the sniveling cold"; advising him to stick to his determination "not to fear the frowns of fortune"; suggesting he "think on [David] Hume, -- what an unfavorable reception his first productions met with in the eyes of a prejudiced public"; discussing a "review paper" Carlyle is trying to publish.
