Dickens sent Austin's letter to Angela Burdett-Coutts, enclosing it in a letter dated December 14, 1849 (cataloged as MA 1352.303).
The letter is part of a collection, MA 1352, which consists of letters from Charles Dickens to the Baroness, to her companion Hannah (Meredith) Brown, or the latter's husband, William Brown; with 70 letters written by others to Miss Coutts or to Dickens in his capacity as her unofficial almoner; and a few others. Provenance
The letters formed part of the Burdett-Coutts sale (Sotheby, 17 May 1922); they were purchased for Oliver W. Barrett in whose collection they remained until it was sold by his son (Parke-Bernet, 31 October 1951).
Summary
Saying that he has drawn up a list of "a complete set of drawing & office instruments [...] as well as the field instruments" (surveying instruments for Miss Coutts) and contacted "some of the best Manufacturers to ascertain which of them would have them ready on so short notice;" writing that the price will be about £80; saying that he will hold off from ordering them until after noon tomorrow, but he leaves for the Isle of Wight at three o'clock.
