The letter is not dated but the poem referred to, "Gertrude of Wyoming: A Pennsylvanian Tale", was first published in a volume with the same title by Longman, Hurst, Rees, and Orme in 1809.

Summary
Explaining that he put the list of subscribers who were to receive copies of Gertrude of Wyoming in a letter to Longman & Rees, "but the sheet being single it has dropt"; writing that he has compiled a list of ten names from memory, which he is enclosing; requesting that, if the names are correct, his correspondent send them on to Longman & Rees "who wait only for the list to dispatch the parcel"; giving the list, which includes the Marquis and Marchioness of Townsend, Lady Elizabeth Loftus, Mrs. Grimston Kilnwick and others.
