A note by the sender at the bottom addresses the recipient as "Pair de France". Under Louis XVIII, Claude-Emmanuel, made a marquis in 1817, was awarded a French peerage for his extensive work on the Constitutional Charter, making him a possible recipient of this letter. Amédée became a marquis in 1840 and was also a member of the Constitutional Council, but hereditary peerages were abolished in 1831.
