Summary
Expressing his pleasure that Greene holds his friend Col. [John Eager] Howard in high esteem; explaining that he has not written because he did not want to intrude on Greene's "good nature and politeness"; praising Greene and his troops: "To their bravery and perseverance we are indebted under God for everything we hold dear upon earth, and I scarcely ever sit down to a meal or repose myself in my bed, without at the same time calling to mind the different situation of those brave little band of Heroes that compose the Southern Army"; calling the capture of Lord Cornwallis an event "of the first magnitude"; saying that he would be honored if Greene would continue their correspondence.
