Notes
This letter was assumed to be to Wordsworth by Gaskell and other biographers of Charlotte Brontë. However the fair copy of the letter, owned by the University of Texas at Austin, is clearly addressed to Hartley Coleridge.
Written on the inside of a wrapper she sent to Coleridge for the return of her manuscript, addressed to C[harles] T[ownshend] (her pseudonym for her Angrian stories), Parsonage, Haworth, near Bradford. The wrapper includes seals and is postmarked "Ambleside."
In pencil.
High reserve.
