Notes
A marginal note makes reference to an "Essay on the Roman Senate, pg. 109": Thomas Chapman published an essay with this title in 1750, and in 1758, Nathaniel Hooke responded to it in "Observations on--I. The Answer of M. l'Abbé de Vertot... IV. An Essay on the Roman Senate, by Dr. T. Chapman...". This was followed by Bowyer's "An Apology for some of Mr. Hooke's Observations regarding the Roman Senate," also published in 1758.
Removed from an extra-illustrated copy of James Boswell, The Life of Samuel Johnson (London: Printed by Henry Baldwin, for Charles Dilly, 1791); PML 9812-9815; volume IV, page 382.
