Housed with an autograph letter signed "W. Potter / June 14/64" attesting to the authenticity of Scott's hand and stating that the four verses in the manuscript were "slightly altered by him [Scott]. That the Song is in Sir W. Scott's handwriting has been clearly proved by a careful comparison of nearly very word in it with three Letters of his, addressed to Mr. Miller, Publisher, London, and dated 1805. And from the character of the writing in the verses being precisely the same as that of the Letters, it is evident the former must have been written about the same time, viz. 1805 or 1806."
