From Irving. Life of Washington, v. 2.
Formerly described as a letter written by Marian (Mrs. William) Byrd, the wife of General Charles Lee's aide-de-camp. According to Ami Pflugrad-Jackisch, the letter is in fact written by Mary Willing Byrd (not Marion), who was the second wife and widow of William Byrd III of Westover Plantation in Charles City County Virginia. Charles Lee's aide-de-camp was her stepson Francis Otway Byrd. Francis Otway Byrd was a son from William Byrd III's first marriage to Elizabeth Hill Carter Byrd (d. 1760) and his wife's name was Anna Munford Byrd. Mary Willing Byrd was the only "M Byrd" at Westover in 1786.--Cf. collection files.
