Summary
Explaining that the reason he has not visited her is due solely to his financial difficulties; saying "I have been under the necessity of pawning my watch and every little valuable article which I had in the world, for necessaries -- yet I have property at my command and have within the last four months made no less than five different bargains for mortgage or sale, all of which failed at the moment that I expected to receive the money -- to all which I have the misfortune to add, that my law business has been ruined by an artful, but dishonest, young man in whom I had placed entire confidence so that instead of being profitable it has cost me money out of pocket for the six months past. I hope, however, & believe that I shall, within a few months, surmount these embarrassments; but, in the mean time, I shall suffer incredible vexations & inconvenience."
