The year of writing is not provided however the letter refers to General Grayson's memoir which was published in 1874 and W.H. Anderson died in 1899.

Summary
Thanking her for the flowers and saying that the "...one reason I have flowers is they always remind me of the resurrection & death into life;" discussing several books and recommending "General [Alfred Wilks] Draysons 20 years at the R.M.A." [Royal Military Academy at Woolwich] for Lord Mount Temple; sending a "bit of Fern" from Africa but adding that African gardeners do not consider it a fern and call it "Asparagus Plumosa."
