Thomas Arnold was the father of Matthew Arnold.
Though the letter is undated, in a letter of Dr. Arnold's written on January 17, 1842, he makes reference to renting a house on Beaumont Street in Oxford for three weeks. See "The Life and Correspondence of Thomas Arnold" by Arthur Penrhyn Stanley (D. Appleton & Co., 1845), pg. 435.
